Plateau State Imposes 24-Hour Curfew in Jos/Bukuru to Prevent Unrest

To maintain law and order, the Plateau State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the Jos/Bukuru metropolis.

The decision follows incidents of looting by hoodlums in various areas of Jos, the state’s capital.

Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs for Governor Caleb Mutfwang, announced the curfew in a statement released late Sunday night.

“In a decisive move to enhance the security of lives and maintain public order, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Jos/Bukuru Metropolis, effective from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024,” Bere stated.

The curfew comes after a review of actions by unscrupulous individuals who exploited the nationwide protest to terrorise innocent citizens.

These criminal elements, armed with daggers, machetes, and other dangerous weapons, targeted shops and restaurants along Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction, stealing foodstuffs and other valuable items.

Governor Mutfwang emphasised that the curfew is in the best interest of all citizens, urging everyone to comply fully to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

He directed state security agencies to enforce the curfew across the Jos/Bukuru Metropolis.

The Governor warned anyone intending to cause further harm to innocent citizens to desist immediately or face legal consequences.

He also called on security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing any potential disruptions to law and order.

In addition, Governor Mutfwang expressed his gratitude to the citizens of the state for their steadfast support of the government’s policies and programmes.

“The peaceful conduct of our people before, during, and after the nationwide protest is commendable.

“I urge everyone to continue to uphold this culture of peace as we work together to build a united and progressive Plateau,” he said.
