Planned Protest: Group Alleges APC Plot to Incite Violence

By Chuks Peter, DELTA

Delta Unity Network, a pro-democracy movement, has accused the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to instigate violent protests starting August 1, 2024.

In a statement, Chairman Dr. Kingsley Etaghene and Secretary Hon. Douglas Nwanne alleged that the APC intends to use hired street urchins to incite chaos under the guise of economic hardship.

The group criticised the state APC for allegedly working against the national leadership of the party and President Bola Tinubu, who has warned against protests.

They urged the Federal Government to intervene and called on Delta residents to reject any schemes leading to lawlessness.

“Delta Unity Network stands against any ill-conceived protest.

No political group or individual in Delta should be allowed to incite the people,” the statement read.

The group noted the stability under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and condemned attempts to disrupt peace.

Delta Unity Network claimed that the current administration is not responsible for the nationwide economic distress and highlighted Governor Oborevwori’s achievements in infrastructure and poverty alleviation.

They argued that the state has seen significant progress under the governor’s leadership, and any attempt to incite unrest would be detrimental to the state’s development.

“We join well-meaning Deltans to say no to protests inimical to the peace and development of our dear state,” the statement concluded.

The group also accused detractors of hypocrisy, stating that it is unfair to blame the current administration for longstanding economic issues.

They called on citizens to recognise the efforts being made to improve the state and to stand together against any actions that could destabilise Delta.

Delta Unity Network’s statement reflects a broader concern over potential violence and unrest during the planned nationwide protests.

They emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the state and urged the community to remain vigilant against any attempts to incite disorder.

The allegations by Delta Unity Network add to the ongoing tensions surrounding the nationwide protests.

As the situation develops, the group’s call for calm and unity as well as highlighted the need for a measured response to the current challenges facing the nation.
