The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has emphasised his commitment to improving road safety, particularly in the transportation of petroleum products, through a partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, Lokpobiri expressed his congratulations to Mohammed on his new appointment and praised the National Road Safety Strategy, inaugurated by the Vice President the previous week.
He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the FRSC in minimising road accidents through initiatives like the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme and driver certification programmes.
However, Lokpobiri raised concerns about the frequent accidents involving petroleum tankers, which have resulted in significant loss of lives and destruction of properties.
“The increasing number of tanker crashes is alarming and demands urgent action,” Lokpobiri stated. He stressed the need for alternative methods of transporting petroleum products, although he admitted that these options are often costly and dangerous.
As part of the solution, he urged the FRSC to ensure that only tankers meeting safety standards are allowed to load petroleum products at depots.
Lokpobiri also pledged the support of the Ministry in providing logistics and training to the FRSC to enhance road traffic management and enforcement of safety measures. He emphasised the shared responsibility of both agencies in ensuring safer highways across the country.
In response, Corps Marshal Mohammed commended Lokpobiri for his reforms in the petroleum sector and highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration to maintain safety in oil transportation.
Mohammed added that the FRSC has already deployed personnel to major petroleum depots to enforce safety regulations, ensuring compliance by tanker drivers.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the partnership, which aims to improve road safety and stabilise the transportation of petroleum products nationwide
