Pastor, 29 Others Arrested for illegal wastes disposal in Delta

The Delta State Task Force on Environment has apprehended 30 individuals, including a well-known pastor, for illegally dumping refuse into public drains in Asaba, the capital city of Delta State.

Olorogun Godspower Asiuhwu, the Chairman of the State Task Force on Environment, made this disclosure during the “NUJ Parley to Party” programme in Asaba.

Addressing journalists, Asiuhwu criticised hotel and eatery owners in Asaba, Warri, Effurun, and other urban areas for channeling septic waste into public drains.

He noted that the practice causes severe environmental pollution and creates offensive odors for nearby residents.

Asiuhwu warned that establishments engaging in such practices would face strict sanctions if they did not cease immediately.

To enforce this, the Task Force has commissioned experts to investigate these businesses and ensure they adopt proper waste disposal methods.

Asiuhwu also highlighted the commitment of Governor Oborevwori’s administration to enhancing the cleanliness of the state. He mentioned that officials have been assigned to monitor and address illegal waste dumping activities.

In line with this commitment, the Task Force plans to improve the aesthetics of the Asaba-Onitsha expressway, from the Custom Check Point to the Bridge, by planting green vegetation.

Also, the deadline for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles to vacate the area has expired, and further action will be taken against violators.

Property owners with uncompleted buildings harboring miscreants have been warned to rectify the situation or risk having their Certificates of Occupancy revoked. Asiuhwu urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to waste disposal to the Task Force or local police.

The Chairman also reiterated the ban on iron and metal scavengers, appealing to developers to cooperate with the government’s efforts to maintain security and cleanliness.

He emphasised the ongoing collaboration between the Task Force and the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for all residents.
