Passing Out Parade: 18 Corps Members abscond as NYSC extends Service Year of 34 Others in Oyo

…Oyo Gov Applaud Corps Members’ Community Projects

No fewer than 18 Corps Members who were posted to Oyo State for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), 2021 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 have absconded from participating in the one year compulsory service.

The NYSC, Oyo State Coordinator, Mrs. Grace Ogbuogebe who made the disclosure while delivering her farewell message at the passing-out ceremony of the 2021 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 Corps Members on thursday, November 17, 2022 in Ibadan, said 34 other Corps Members “will serve extension of service for absenteeism, insubordination etc.”

She applauded the 2,371 corps members who successfully completed the service year, urging them to be good ambassadors of the scheme wherever they find themselves.

She further enjoined them to “allow the useful lessons of dignity of labour, self reliance, selfless service and peaceful coexistence that you have imbibed in the past one year to be your guiding principle for the rest of your lives.

“You should therefore resolve in your mind to try your hands on productive ventures as a means of earning a decent living in the society.” She said.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde who was represented at the event by the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Seun Fakorede appreciated the Corps Members for their service to the State.

According to him, the community development project embarked upon by the corps members impacted positively in their hosts communities.

He said, “the government and the good people of Oyo State sincerely appreciate your immeasurable commitment and patriotism in the cause of your service here in the state.

“The enthusiasm which you contributed your quota to the development of the pace setter State through the community development service project cannot be over emphasized.

“I stand to affirm that the laudable project embarked upon really impacted lives positively in the host community and this shows that you have selflessly achieved the mandate of the scheme.

“The indelible legacies you left towards the socio-economic development of Oyo State is overwhelming, highly commendable and we remain indebted to you all.”

Reacting in an interview with NATIONAL TELESCOPE on the absconded Corps Members, Hon. Fakorede said ” we should all note that this scheme is put together to serve the good people of the respective State and the Nation at large, so I don’t see any reason why anyone should actually abscond from a scheme like this. Because this is perhaps one of the primary opportunity you have to serve your country directly.” He added.

The Passing Out Parade which is the first jointly held in the State since the easing of the covid-19 lockdown featured the presentation of State Honour to one of the Corps Members, Adubasim Chubike John while two others, Jaafar Ibrahim Khali and Adekunle Temitope received the NYSC, Oyo State Coordinators’ Commendation for their outstanding services at their respective host community.
