Officials of the Lagos Task Force seized some commercial vehicles in Ikeja as Motorists in Lagos State were thrown into panic on Monday.
This action sparked fears of an imminent enforcement of the ban on commercial yellow buses, known locally as Danfo and Korope.
The Lagos Task Force, however, described the operation as a routine exercise aimed at curbing the excesses of commercial drivers who cause traffic congestion.
Our correspondent observed that the task force officials also removed traders near the Ikeja Under Bridge bus stop and seized vehicles obstructing traffic.
This operation led to a scarcity of vehicles in the area, leaving many commuters stranded.
Yakub, a commercial driver, expressed concern that the crackdown might be related to the upcoming ban on Danfo and Korope in certain parts of the state. “They have been clamping down on commercial vehicles since last week.
We heard that the new chairman gave the order and that the government plans to stop us from operating from October 1,” he said.
Another motorist, Ige Adetunji, urged the government to integrate affected commercial drivers into its transport plans to prevent job losses.
“If they want to ban Danfo and Korope, they should find a way to accommodate the drivers into the state’s transport system,” he said.
Raheem Gbadeyanka, spokesperson for the Lagos Task Force, clarified that the exercise was a regular activity aimed at ensuring free traffic flow.
“Our actions are to prevent traffic obstruction by drivers picking up passengers at undesignated bus stops.
This is a continuous effort to keep Lagos roads free from traffic and is not related to the proposed ban on Danfo and Korope, which starts on October 1,” Gbadeyanka explained.
