Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde has said that his administration is committed to the welfare of Corps members posted for one-year mandatory service in the State.
The Governor made this known on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps Members of 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 deployed to Oyo State at the NYSC orientation Camp, Iseyin.
The governor who was represented by the deputy Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal said his administration will continue to secure and uplift the welfare of the corps members.
He said, “let me use this occasion to assure you that our administration has put in place the necessary machinery to give security in the State that support they need to carry out their duties and responsibility of securing lives and property in the State including that of Corps Members is very paramount to us.
“we stand as one of the highest paying State in Nigeria and we remain committed to ensuring that Corps Members in our dear State live comfortably.”
Speaking further, he said, “I want to let you know that answering the clarion call behoves a responsibility of hard work, discipline and commitment to the quest for national development and Oyo State in particular. Therefore, I expect to brace up and rise to the challenge with a mindset of sacrifice, dedication, and humility, he added.
“The priceless contributions of youths to national development in the past fifty (50) years of fostering national unity cannot be overemphasized. Over the years, successive batches of Corps Members have been consistent in demonstrating their commitment to building a better Nigeria through their contributions to education, agriculture and innovations in infrastructural development.”
Earlier in his address, the Oyo NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Odoba Oche lauded the task achieved by the scheme in one year.
“Engaging the youth for one year in the task of nation building is quite a laudable programme that the Scheme has been running for the past fifty (50) years. The three weeks duration of the orientation programme will play host to various activities designed to ensure the accomplishment of the objectives of the NYSC scheme. Theses include paramilitary drills, physical training, citizenship and leadership grooming, lectured on skill acquisition for self-reliance. It is from this crucible that development, discipline, unity, self- reliance and more are brewed, he said.
Adding that for a country to attain greatness, youths must be transformed by using a vision based approach and focus must be placed on building young people’s strength and skills.”
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mrs Olubukola Oladipo advised the Corps members to live as one entity, irrespective of the tribes they originate from.
“Regardless of our religious differences, ethical inclinations and ideological beliefs, Oyo State is habitable for all and sundry. Our people are loving, caring and accommodating in nature to make your stay a memorable and interesting one. She urged them to feel free to interact with people, familiarize yourselves with our ways of life and enjoy our nutritious foods”.
The highlight of the event was the administration of the oath of allegiance to the corps members by the Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabode Yerima and the inspection of the multipurpose hall site at the camp by the Deputy Governor. This project will enable Corps Members have a conducive place for their skill acquisition training.
Present at the event were the representative of collaborating Agencies which includes, the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Man O’ War amongst others.
