Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially confirmed Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the next Olubadan of Ibadan land.

The announcement was made during a farewell ceremony for the late Olubadan, Oba Olalekan Balogun, held on Saturday at the Obafemi Awolowo Liberty Stadium in Oke Ado, Ibadan.

In his address, Makinde acknowledged the nomination of Olakulehin by the Olubadan-in-Council and confirmed his acceptance of the nomination.

He assured that the enthronement ceremony for Olakulehin would proceed promptly upon confirmation of his medical fitness.

“The recommendation of the Olubadan-in-Council has been accepted, and once Oba Olakulehin is medically fit, he will be enthroned because due process has been followed,” Makinde stated.

Makinde praised the late Oba Olalekan Balogun as a vibrant and participatory leader.

He also highlighted the recent amendment to the chieftaincy law in May, which grants the state governor authority over the enthronement of monarchs.

This amendment, according to Makinde, ensures that due process is adhered to in the selection and installation of traditional rulers.

The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, also spoke at the event, lauding the late Olubadan as a dedicated and intelligent leader who served his people with distinction.

Former Oyo South Senator Kola Balogun expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde’s administration for honouring his family and his late elder brother, the previous Olubadan.

The confirmation of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the next Olubadan marks a significant step in the continuation of the traditional leadership of Ibadan land.

The process follows the protocols established by the Olubadan-in-Council, ensuring that the succession is carried out smoothly and in accordance with established customs.

The upcoming enthronement ceremony will not only honour the new Olubadan but also reflect the rich cultural heritage of Ibadan land.

Governor Makinde’s commitment to upholding tradition while ensuring modern governance standards is evident in this seamless transition of power.

As the people of Ibadan prepare to welcome their new leader, the legacy of the late Oba Olalekan Balogun will continue to be celebrated, and the administration looks forward to a prosperous and peaceful reign under Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
