Oyo Funds Burial for Nigerian Flag Designer, Pa Akinkunmi

By Funmi Ojo

The Oyo State Government has provided financial support for the burial of Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the esteemed designer of the Nigerian flag, whose family faced difficulties organising his funeral since his death on August 29, 2023.

In a statement released by the family’s spokesperson, Samuel Akinkunmi, it was revealed that Governor Seyi Makinde honoured his pledge to assist with the burial costs, addressing the gap left by the Federal Government’s lack of support.

Pa Akinkunmi, originally from Abeokuta in Ogun State, designed the Nigerian flag in 1959 and resided in Ibadan, Oyo State, until his passing.

Despite his significant contribution to Nigeria’s national identity, his family struggled to raise the necessary funds for his burial.

The family has expressed their deep appreciation to Governor Makinde, the 7th Assembly members, the state Advisory Council, and the Yoruba World Congress UK for their support during this challenging time.

They have also urged the Federal Government to honour its earlier commitment to assist with the burial arrangements.

The delay in Pa Akinkunmi’s burial, due to financial constraints, has highlighted the need for timely support for individuals who have made notable contributions to the nation.
