In a bid to eliminate open defecation in Oyo State, the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) on Monday donated motorcycles, public address systems, and sanitary items to 10 local government areas.
The items distributed include 100 Ahuja speakers, six motorcycles (allocated to Egbeda, Ona-Ara, and Ibarapa-East Local Governments), and various sanitary products.
These resources are aimed at intensifying the fight against open defecation across the state.
The Chairman of RUWASSA, Babalola Afobaje, announced that the donation was part of his activities marking 100 days in office.
“This initiative is a significant step towards achieving an end to open defecation in our local councils and communities,” he stated.
Afobaje highlighted the support received from international partners, including the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), noting, “In the past 100 days, the agency has enjoyed tremendous support from UNICEF in its efforts to end open defecation in Egbeda, Ona-Ara, and Ibarapa-East Local Governments.”
He further emphasised the installation of solar-powered boreholes in various local governments, underscoring that the recent donation aims to complement these efforts.
The Chairman urged local authorities to distribute the items promptly and effectively, stressing that the agency’s partnership with UNICEF has positively impacted the lives of people in Oyo State.
Afobaje also praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering support, which has attracted international partnerships and donor collaborations.
Reacting to the donation, the Chairman of Egbeda Local Government Area, Sikiru Sanda, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We appreciate RUWASSA for this gesture and assure that all items will be used for their intended purpose.”
The 10 benefiting local governments include Egbeda, Ibarapa East, Ogo-Oluwa, Iseyin, Oluyole, Ibadan South-East, Ona-Ara, among others.
