Outrage over killings in Edo, Plateau, others

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The recent wave of killings in Edo, Plateau, and Kaduna states has sparked nationwide outrage, with citizens and human rights groups condemning the continuous loss of lives and the perceived lack of justice.

The attacks, which have left numerous families in mourning, have raised concerns about security, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria.

In Edo State, reports indicate that armed assailants carried out a brutal attack on innocent civilians, leaving several dead and many others injured.

While the exact details of the perpetrators remain unclear, eyewitnesses and local sources suggest that organized criminal elements may be responsible.

The incident has intensified demands for urgent government intervention to curb the rising tide of violence in the region.

Meanwhile, in Plateau and Kaduna states, massacres have continued unabated, with communities frequently coming under siege by armed groups.

These attacks, often attributed to bandits or armed herdsmen, have resulted in mass displacement, destruction of property, and significant casualties.

Despite repeated calls for action, many residents claim that authorities have failed to bring the perpetrators to justice, allowing the cycle of violence to persist.

Adding to the outrage is the lingering case of Deborah Samuel, a student who was brutally murdered in Sokoto State in broad daylight.

Her killing, allegedly over accusations of blasphemy, sparked national and international condemnation. However, critics argue that justice has yet to be served, further eroding public trust in the legal system.

Social media has been flooded with reactions, with the hashtag #EdoMassacre trending alongside #Fulani and #Kidnappers, reflecting public frustration over the security crisis.

Many have accused the government of not doing enough to prevent these recurring tragedies, calling for a stronger stance against terrorism, ethnic violence, and impunity.

Human rights organizations have urged the Nigerian government to take immediate steps to investigate these incidents thoroughly and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“The continuous loss of lives without consequences is unacceptable. We demand justice for all victims and comprehensive measures to address insecurity,” said a spokesperson for Amnesty International Nigeria.
