Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has assured the people of Delta State that plans are underway to upgrade Osubi Airport to international standards.
Keyamo revealed this during the inauguration of a new police station at Osubi Airport in the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Voke Oshasha, Keyamo also inaugurated a fuel depot at the airport.
“This initiative will enhance passengers’ safety and benefit the Osubi community.
“We are working on expanding Osubi Airport to international standards. It is a process,” Keyamo stated.
The airport manager, Egwuatu, noted that the new police station is essential for addressing civil issues at the airport and was constructed using the airport’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
He expressed gratitude to FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, for her support in realising the presidential directive concerning Osubi Airport.
Established in 1999 primarily for petroleum exploration, the airport was operated by SPDC until 2015 when Shoreline Oil Services Limited took over.
It was closed in February 2020 due to safety and debt issues, but operations resumed under FAAN in March 2021.
FAAN’s MD/CEO, Olubunmi Kuku, praised Keyamo for his innovations in the aviation sector and commended Egwuatu’s achievements.
She highlighted the importance of the upgrades and the positive impact they will have on the region.
The Chairman of Okpe Local Government, Isaiah Esiovwa, and the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), also applauded the airport’s transformation.
They highlighted the significant benefits it will bring to the residents of Delta State, enhancing economic development and connectivity.
