Ohanaeze Ndigbo has issued a stern warning to Igbo indigenes, urging them to refrain from participating in the upcoming nationwide protest slated for August 2024. The directive, reiterated through a statement by Dr. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary, emphasizes the organization’s stance against involvement in the planned demonstrations.
The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, highlighted reasons for this stance, citing concerns over the treatment of Igbo youths in past protests. He pointed out disparities in the handling of dissent among various ethnic groups, notably referencing the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, which sparked significant unrest among Igbo communities.
Addressing the broader socio-political landscape, Ohanaeze Ndigbo condemned what it termed “Igbophobia,” asserting that systemic injustices and marginalization against the Igbo have perpetuated national discord and hindered collective progress. The organization underscored the need for inclusive governance and equitable treatment of all ethnic groups to foster peace and national development.
In response to recent remarks by Chief Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, accusing Igbo supporters of plotting to destabilize the government under the guise of protest, Ohanaeze Ndigbo dismissed these allegations as divisive and unwarranted. The organization called for constructive dialogue and policy reforms to address the widespread economic hardships and security challenges affecting all Nigerians.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo concluded by urging the Igbo community to prioritize dialogue and engagement over participation in protests, emphasizing the importance of national unity and inclusive governance in steering Nigeria towards stability and prosperity.
