Offa Bank Robbery: Judgement Reserved for August 2, 2024

Justice Haleema Salman of the Kwara State High Court has reserved judgement in the six-year trial of six suspects involved in the infamous April 5, 2018, Offa bank robbery.

The verdict is tentatively set for August 2, 2024.

During Monday’s court session, final written addresses were adopted, summarising the arguments from both sides. Rotimi Jacob (SAN) represented the state, while Mathew Emeribe served as the defence counsel.

The prosecution and defence teams presented their addresses sequentially on points of law.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its brutal nature. On April 5, 2018, armed robbers attacked five commercial banks in Offa, Kwara State, resulting in the deaths of over 30 individuals, including nine policemen.

The suspects, Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye, and Adeola Abraham, were charged with conspiracy to rob, murder, and illegal possession of firearms.

A sixth suspect, Michael Adikwu, died in police custody.

The trial, which commenced on November 11, 2018, has seen Ayoade Akinnibosun and the other accused plead not guilty. As the court proceedings draw to a close, the tentative judgement date awaits final confirmation.
