In a bid to address the recent developments surrounding his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has provided a comprehensive explanation during a meeting with leaders from the Deputy Governor’s Edo North Senatorial District.

This clarification comes in response to a court order that halted the alleged impeachment proceedings against Shaibu. Governor Obaseki revealed that the court action was taken in the context of Shaibu’s anticipated defection to the All Progressives Congress, shedding light on the circumstances that led to this situation.

Governor Obaseki categorically stated that he had no involvement in any plot or scheme to impeach Shaibu, asserting that he had thoroughly examined the situation and found no evidence of such intentions. He expressed his shock and disappointment at the court action, considering the trust he had vested in his deputy’s role.

Addressing the recent turn of events, Governor Obaseki commented on the Deputy Governor’s preemptive move, speculating that it was aimed at bringing to a conclusion what had been initiated in the past weeks. The Governor drew parallels with past instances of consultation, recounting an incident in Akoko-Edo where local leaders had voiced their concerns over candidates being imposed.

Governor Obaseki shared his perspective on the matter, indicating that he had considered the viewpoints of the local leaders and acted accordingly, demonstrating his commitment to fair representation. He questioned the decision to recommend a candidate associated with an opposing party, highlighting the ensuing resistance and his subsequent acquiescence to the local leaders’ preferences.

Further insights revealed that Governor Obaseki had observed Shaibu’s engagement with the opposition party through social media and learned of his consultations with members from another political group. He noted that these actions were apparently driven by uncertainties regarding securing the governorship ticket within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2024.

Governor Obaseki emphasized the lack of communication regarding Shaibu’s ambitions and recalled a past conversation regarding succession plans. He advocated for patience and the completion of ongoing projects as crucial factors in garnering public support for his successor. This unity within the party, he concluded, was integral to achieving their collective goals.
