Obasanjo, Jonathan, First Lady, others grace Gowon’s 90th Thanksgiving Service

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were among the dignitaries that graced the special thanksgiving service of former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) as he turns 90 on Saturday.

The event took place at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, where family and friends gathered to celebrate Gowon’s legacy.

In her remarks, Oluremi Tinubu highlighted Gowon’s exemplary qualities of simplicity, humility, and patriotism, stating that his life serves as a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s future.

Reflecting on Gowon’s impact, the First Lady recalled her own memories from when he assumed power at the age of six.

She noted, “Your life, destined by God, stands as an exemplary model in a world often filled with cynicism and despair.”

Expressing gratitude on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, she emphasized that Gowon’s leadership provides valuable lessons for current and future leaders.

Oluremi Tinubu quoted scripture, reminding attendees of the importance of loving one’s neighbors and the profound sense of community that Gowon has fostered. She prayed for continued strength and health for the celebrant.

In his speech, Gowon encouraged Nigerians to keep praying for the country, recalling his famous words: “To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done.”

He reflected on the collective efforts during his leadership to maintain national unity, emphasizing that Nigeria emerged victorious from past conflicts.

The thanksgiving service was marked by prayers and uplifting performances from various choir groups, celebrating the enduring spirit of unity and hope.
