Students of Obafemi Awolowo University sustained injuries when a torrential rainfall and whirlwind on Thursday morning caused the ceiling of the Amphitheater in Oduduwa Hall to collapse during a lecture.

According to a statement by the university’s spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, “The torrential rainfall of early Thursday morning, accompanied by a whirlwind, started as students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, were having a lecture in the Amphitheater of Oduduwa Hall.
The ceiling of the Amphitheater fell off and injured a few of the students.”

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, along with other principal officers, visited the university’s medical and health centre to ensure that the injured students received adequate medical attention.

The Vice-Chancellor also accompanied two other students, whose injuries required more extensive care, to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), where Chief Medical Director, John Okeniyi personally supervised their treatment.

Professor Bamire appealed for calm and urged students and staff to continue their academic and administrative activities as usual.

Meanwhile, the university management has sealed off the Amphitheater, the site of the incident, until further notice.
