NYSC to Prosecute 54 Unical Graduates After Demobilisation

In a bid to curb the mobilisation of unqualified graduates, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has demobilised 54 corps members who were illegally mobilised by the University of Calabar (Unical).

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, disclosed this in Abuja, noting that the affected individuals will face legal prosecution.

Brigadier General Ahmed revealed that 19 additional individuals who attempted to register online for mobilisation were blocked from service, while four other Certificates of National Service were withheld by the Scheme.

This recent action follows the earlier invalidation of 101 certificates, bringing the total number of voided certificates to 178.

The Director-General praised the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, for her proactive approach in alerting the NYSC about the unqualified graduates.

He highlighted her commitment to upholding the integrity of the institution’s mobilisation process.

“Professor Obi informed us that some names on the graduation list should not have been there. We reviewed the list and confirmed that the certificates of these individuals would be invalidated. I commend the Vice-Chancellor for her honesty,” said General Ahmed.

He further mentioned that in the past, a bread seller was falsely included in the graduation list from the same university, highlighting the presence of bad actors who manipulate matriculation numbers and courses.

General Ahmed assured that the NYSC will continue to collaborate with Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs) and stakeholders across the country to ensure that the mobilisation process is free of irregularities. He warned that any lapse in the process reflects poorly on the integrity of the institution involved.

The Director-General also urged employers to verify the authenticity of National Service Certificates presented by job applicants to avoid hiring individuals with fake credentials.
