No Shortfall in Salaries: FG Clarifies January and February Payments

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

The Federal Government has debunked claims of a shortfall in salaries paid to federal workers in January and February 2025.

According to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), the salaries received by workers during these months were their normal wages, following the exhaustion of various arrears paid from October to December 2024.

The OAGF explained that the abnormal increase in salaries during the last quarter of 2024 was due to the payment of minimum wage arrears, 25%/35% increase in salary arrears, and wage award arrears.

With these arrears fully paid, the OAGF maintained that the salaries paid in January and February 2025 reflected the workers’ actual take-home pay.

The OAGF also addressed concerns over alleged overpayments in December 2024, attributing the error to a glitch in the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) platform.

The error has since been corrected, and deductions are being made from the salaries of affected workers to recover the overpayments.

In a related development, the OAGF assured workers that the payment of promotion arrears is being handled by a Standing Committee on Promotion and Salary Arrears in the Budget Office of the Federation (BOF).

The committee compiles and vets all salary and promotion arrears from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) before forwarding them to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for payment.

The OAGF reiterated its commitment to efficiently managing the IPPIS, urging workers with genuine complaints about their salaries to follow formal channels for prompt resolution.
