The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted heavy rainfall in May and June 2025, which may lead to flash floods in coastal cities.
This prediction was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the presentation of the annual climate prediction for 2025 in Abuja.
Key Highlights of the Prediction:
- Delayed Onset of Rain: The onset of rain is expected to be delayed in northern and central states, including Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara.
- Early Onset of Rain: Southern states, including Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi, can expect an early onset of rain.
- End of Rainy Season: The end of the rainy season is predicted to be earlier than usual in some states, including Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo. However, some states, including Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu, can expect a delayed end to the rainy season.
- Temperature: Temperatures are expected to be above the long-term average across the country, with warmer daytime and nighttime temperatures predicted for most parts of the country in January, February, March, and May.
