NiMet Forecasts Hazy, Sunny Weather with Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast for hazy and sunny weather from Sunday through Tuesday across the country, with chances of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in several regions.

In its weather outlook released on Saturday, NiMet projected moderate dust haze in northern areas on Sunday, with visibility expected to range between 2 km to 5 km and, in some areas, reduce to as low as 1,000 meters.

“Northern residents should prepare for dust haze and limited visibility, especially early in the day,” NiMet advised.

According to the forecast, North Central regions like the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa States will experience sunny skies with scattered clouds in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rain later in the afternoon and evening.

“Expect brief thunderstorms in the afternoons across North Central areas, so carry an umbrella or raincoat,” NiMet suggested.

Southern regions, including Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States, can expect thunderstorms and moderate rains early in the morning, with more rainfall likely in the afternoon.

“People in the South should anticipate scattered rainfall throughout the day,” the agency noted.

For Monday, NiMet forecasted that the northern region would continue with moderate dust haze and limited visibility.

Meanwhile, North Central residents will see sunny skies with cloud patches in the morning and storms later over areas like Kwara, Benue, and Kogi States.

The southern regions, particularly Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Lagos States, are expected to experience morning thunderstorms and moderate rain, with more storms likely in the afternoon.

By Tuesday, dust haze conditions are anticipated to persist in northern areas, with reduced visibility in some locations.

Sunny skies with cloud patches are expected in the central region, while parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the south will likely have morning rain showers, continuing into the day.

NiMet also urged caution, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma, as dust particles may remain suspended in the air.

“Take necessary precautions for dust and strong winds, especially in areas forecasted for thunderstorms,” the agency advised.

In addition, NiMet recommended that airline operators seek detailed, airport-specific weather information to ensure safe travel plans.
