Nigeria’s Tax System Unfairly Burdens the Poor, says Fiscal Reform Chair

Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal and Tax Reforms Committee, highlighted the undue tax burden placed on Nigeria’s poorest citizens.

During an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, he emphasised that the current tax system disproportionately affects the vulnerable, who should be relieved of this burden.

Oyedele called for a reevaluation of the tax system, proposing that the focus should shift from merely raising taxes for existing taxpayers to expanding the tax base.

He suggested that the middle class, elites, and those who can afford to pay more should bear a fairer share of tax responsibilities, adhering to the principle of progressive taxation.

He criticised the current approach of celebrating incremental progress in revenue transformation, noting that the tax base is too small to significantly impact the country’s economy.

Oyedele’s comments underscore the need for a more equitable tax system that relieves small businesses and vulnerable populations from excessive taxation.
