Nigeria’s First Olympic Medallist, Nojim Maiyegun, Dies at 85

Nigeria’s first Olympic medallist, Nojim Maiyegun, has passed away at the age of 85. He reportedly died of natural causes in Vienna, Austria, where he had lived for many years.

Maiyegun etched his name in history by winning a bronze medal in boxing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, marking Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic medal. His historic achievement ended Nigeria’s 12-year wait for Olympic glory.

Remarkably, his death comes just days after the 60th anniversary of this groundbreaking accomplishment.

Born on February 17, 1941, in Lagos, Maiyegun’s legacy is one of inspiration and pioneering success. His triumph at the Olympics not only brought pride to Nigeria but also paved the way for future generations of Nigerian athletes to pursue excellence on the global stage.
