The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has expressed serious concern over the worsening state of the nation and called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the ongoing hardships faced by Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the YCE’s General-Secretary, Chief Oladipo Oyewole, expressed the Council’s distress over the current state of affairs, while maintaining hope for a future positive turnaround.
“The YCE remains hopeful that Nigeria will have a turnaround,” Chief Oyewole stated.
“However, going by the scanty information available on government pursuits and activities, there is, presently, a lot of suffering in the land.”
The YCE emphasised that the government must prioritize the needs of the people.
“We stand firmly on our position that the interest of the masses to live a good life should be given full attention,” the statement continued.
Chief Oyewole further highlighted the dire conditions faced by many Nigerians, pointing out that the lack of regular electricity supply and the recent increase in the price of petroleum products (PMS) have only worsened the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.
He noted that the government’s current approach, which involves the distribution of palliatives, is ineffective: “The Federal Government ought to immediately pursue every avenue to make available to our people the dividends of democracy, not through distribution of palliatives that do not seem to filter to the bottom but by establishing avenues for proper and quality living through effective governance.”
The YCE insisted that all Nigerians should benefit from the country’s resources, adding, “Indeed, Nigerians are suffering deeply at this time no light, no fuel, no food.”
