Nigeria, Japan to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Japan’s Foreign Minister, Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, met with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on Saturday in a significant move to strengthen ties between both countries.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo, where discussions centered on boosting cooperation in various sectors, particularly business and economic relations.

The details of the meeting were disclosed in a statement by Shimada Mami, Third Secretary, Culture and Information/General/Protocol Section at the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria.

Yoko expressed her gratitude for the productive discussions during her visit to Nigeria in April this year. She emphasized Japan’s interest in deepening economic relations, particularly in supporting start-ups, as part of a broader strategy to enhance bilateral cooperation.

During her visit to Nigeria, Yoko noted the challenges faced by internally displaced women and advocated for initiatives grounded in the Women, Peace, and Security framework.

She reiterated Japan’s commitment to working closely with Nigeria to address global issues, commending Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and their shared commitment to democratic values.

She also affirmed Japan’s desire to collaborate on solving global challenges alongside Nigeria, a key African leader committed to democracy,” the statement read.

In response, Ambassador Tuggar welcomed the tangible progress made through the TICAD process and expressed appreciation for Japan’s ongoing support. He emphasized Nigeria’s interest in further strengthening both bilateral and regional cooperation.

The meeting concluded with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to enhancing Japan-Nigeria relations as they prepare for TICAD 9, scheduled for next year.

“The two ministers confirmed their dedication to further deepen Japan-Nigeria relations in anticipation of TICAD 9 next year,” the statement added.
