Nigeria Gets IOM’s Additional $668,000 to Assist Flood Victims

As the rainy season continues to wreak havoc in many parts of Nigeria, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced an additional allocation of $668,000 through its Rapid Response Fund (RRF) to support emergency humanitarian efforts in flood-affected communities across the country.

IOM’s Chief of Mission ad interim in Nigeria, Paola Pace, made the announcement in a statement released on Thursday.

The new funding will aid localised relief efforts by IOM’s partners, including Relief Rescue Initiative, Safer World Foundation, and Community Engagement and Social Development Initiative, in the worst-hit states of Jigawa, Katsina, and Bauchi.

These areas have seen devastating floods that have displaced tens of thousands of people.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance for their generous contributions to the RRF, which have made this response possible,” the statement read.

This additional funding follows an initial allocation of $1.8 million in October, which supported the work of nine local and international NGOs responding to the flooding.

With this second round of funding, IOM has now committed over $2.4 million to flood relief efforts in Nigeria in 2024.

The financial support will help provide life-saving services, including emergency shelter, clean water, sanitation, and protection, as well as multi-purpose cash assistance for over 228,777 people in the affected areas.

These interventions aim not only to address immediate humanitarian needs but also to support the long-term recovery and resilience of flood-affected communities.

IOM has emphasized the importance of coordination with local and national authorities, as well as other humanitarian partners, to ensure a comprehensive and effective response. The organisation remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to recover from the catastrophic floods and rebuild the affected communities.

“IOM’s operations are conducted in close coordination with government agencies and other humanitarian partners to ensure timely and impactful assistance,” the statement concluded.
