The Nigerian government has strongly condemned the shooting of an Immigration officer by a Chinese businessman in Minna, Niger state.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the incident as “unacceptable” and vowed to take diplomatic action against the Chinese government.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the Immigration officer was shot while performing his routine duty of asking questions about work permits at a Chinese company.
The minister emphasized that no Nigerian should be ill-treated for doing their legitimate duty, and the government would not tolerate such behavior.
Tunji-Ojo stated that the incident was a “slap on Nigeria as a nation” and warned that the government would take tough measures against the Chinese businessman and his company.
He also announced plans to reform the country’s migration policy, including the introduction of an e-visa application system and a three-month asylum window for expatriates with overstayed visas.
The minister emphasized that Nigeria welcomes foreign investors and workers, but they must obey the country’s laws.
He warned that those who abuse Nigeria’s immigration protocols would face enforcement, prosecution, and deportation.
