NFF Plans to Introduce VAR in NPFL, Announces Referee Upgrades

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Misa Gusau, has announced that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will soon be introduced in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Gusau made this announcement at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, following the opening match of the premier league between defending champions Rangers International and Wikki Tourists.

Gusau emphasised that implementing VAR requires skilled operators.

“We want to ensure that we have qualified and well-trained personnel to manage VAR effectively,” he said.

He assured that the focus would initially be on comprehensive training and retraining to ensure the system’s efficiency and accuracy.

Looking ahead to the 2024/25 season, Gusau promised significant improvements in the league.

He revealed that referees will soon use communication gadgets to enhance their coordination. “We are committed to elevating the league to international standards.

The introduction of VAR is part of this effort, but our immediate priority is training the right personnel to prevent any errors with the new system,” Gusau explained.

He also noted, “Starting next week, our referees will begin using communication gadgets.

This will allow referees to communicate with each other without needing to approach their assistants, streamlining the officiating process.”
