The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has issued a warning about the heightened risk of flooding in 362 vulnerable communities across 14 local government areas in Kano State.
This alert was delivered by NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, during a one-day stakeholders’ meeting held in Kano on Thursday.
The meeting, titled “Solid Waste Management and Flood Preparedness: Downscaling 2024 Flood Early Warning Strategies for Grassroots Action,” focused on preparing communities for the impending rainy season.
The local government areas identified as high-risk include Rimin Gado, Tofa, Kabo, Madobi, Garun Malam, Bebeji, Rano, Dawakin Kudu, Warawa, Wudil, Sumaila, Ajingi, Kura, and Dala.
These areas are particularly susceptible to flooding, and NEMA’s warning highlights the urgent need for both effective solid waste management and proactive flood preparedness.
Mrs. Umar emphasised the importance of these measures to protect lives and livelihoods during the rainy season.
She urged communities to adopt strategies that would mitigate the risks associated with flooding, stressing that early action is crucial to minimising the potential impact.
In support of this initiative, the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens against disasters and emergencies.
She assured that the government is dedicated to implementing measures that will reduce the vulnerability of these communities to flooding and other related emergencies.
The workshop, which brought together various stakeholders, was organised by NEMA in collaboration with the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
The event provided a platform for discussing flood preparedness and solid waste management strategies, aiming to enhance the resilience of the communities at risk.
As the rainy season approaches, NEMA’s warning serves as a crucial reminder for both government authorities and local communities to take necessary actions to prevent and mitigate the devastating effects of flooding.
