NDLEA Celebrate Four Years of Progress

By Ekpenyong Emmanuel

As Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa marks four years as chairman and CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), he takes pride in the agency’s transformation and achievements.

Marwa’s tenure has been marked by a renewed focus on tackling Nigeria’s drug abuse problem, and he’s confident that the agency is on the right track.

When asked about the challenges he’s faced, Marwa replied, “I do not look for an easy job. Rather, I look for jobs that have to be done to make society better”.

“He acknowledged that the task of sanitizing the country is enormous, but expressed optimism about the progress made so far.

Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has recorded significant successes, including the seizure of over 2.7 million kilograms of illicit drugs and the conviction of 3,427 culprits in 2024 alone.

The agency has also made strides in dismantling international cartels and disrupting the distribution network of illicit substances.

Marwa attributed the agency’s success to its collaborative approach, working closely with domestic and international partners, including NAFDAC.

He also emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of drug abuse, such as poverty and lack of education.

The NDLEA has also made progress in addressing the cultivation of cannabis, a major challenge in Nigeria.

Marwa noted that the agency has destroyed hundreds of hectares of cannabis farms and is working to provide alternative livelihoods for farmers through its Alternative Development program.

As the NDLEA continues to make progress, Marwa remains committed to his mission of making Nigeria a drug-free society.

With his leadership and the agency’s renewed focus, there’s hope that Nigeria will overcome its drug abuse problem and become a safer, healthier nation.
