The Akwa Ibom State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), announced the arrest of 300 suspects and the seizure of 190.419 kg of hard drugs between July 2023 and May 2024.

This announcement was made by Mrs. Obot Bassey, the state commander of the NDLEA, during a press conference in Uyo, held in anticipation of the June 26 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Of the 300 suspects arrested, 249 were males and 51 were females. Additionally, 61 drug offenders were convicted during this period.

Mrs. Bassey highlighted the severe impact of drugs on individuals’ health and societal well-being, noting the emergence of dangerous substances like fentanyl in the illicit drug market, which has caused numerous deaths.

She said that the illicit drug trade fuels crime and violence within communities and across the nation.

To combat this growing threat, she called for substantial investment in preventive measures from the government, philanthropists, individuals, and institutions.
