Afam Osigwe, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has taken a significant step to support those involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests by directing NBA branches to actively monitor the trials of protesters.
Recognising the potential challenges faced by protesters who may not have legal representation, Osigwe also announced the launch of a pro bono support initiative to ensure they receive proper legal assistance.
In his announcement, made via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Osigwe emphasised the role of the newly established NBA Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC).
This committee has been tasked with working closely with NBA branches, particularly their Chairmen and Human Rights Committees, to ensure that no defendant experiences injustice during their trial.
The NBA’s legal teams have been deployed to monitor court proceedings rigorously.
Their focus is on ensuring that due process is followed, the rule of law is upheld, and the human rights of all defendants are protected throughout the judicial process.
