The Chairman of the Ilorin Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Sulyman Kosemani, has lauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its commitment to tackling corruption in Nigeria.
Kosemani made this commendation during a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s Zonal Director, Harry Erin, at the Commission’s office in Ilorin on Tuesday
Leading a delegation of NBA executives, Kosemani emphasized the need for synergy between the legal profession and the EFCC to achieve greater results in the anti-corruption fight.
“We are aware of your role in society, and our responsibility is to promote the rule of law and ensure that citizens’ rights are not infringed upon,” he said.
Kosemani praised the EFCC’s adherence to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) in its operations, particularly in obtaining statements from suspects. “Your dedication to transparency and fairness in investigations enhances the integrity of our justice system and reinforces public confidence in the fight against economic and financial crimes,” he stated.
He highlighted the EFCC’s efforts in addressing internet fraud and urged the Commission to intensify its focus on public officials who mismanage funds.
“The EFCC’s work in dealing with internet fraudsters, particularly the youth, is commendable. I implore the Commission to apply the same vigor in tackling public officers who misuse public resources,” he added.
Kosemani also expressed confidence in the leadership of the EFCC under Ola Olukoyede, urging the Commission to sustain its momentum and ensure no sacred cows are spared in the fight against corruption.
He called for a stronger relationship between the Bar and the EFCC to enhance cooperation and resolve potential challenges.
“Our ultimate goal is not only to combat corruption but also to foster collaboration between the legal profession and the EFCC. Together, we can strengthen public trust and achieve meaningful outcomes,” he said.
Responding, the EFCC Zonal Director, Harry Erin, appreciated the NBA’s support and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while fighting corruption.
Erin noted that the legal profession plays a critical role in ensuring accountability and urged lawyers not to hinder corruption cases under the guise of defending their clients.
“We must ensure that our collective wealth is not flagrantly stolen by those entrusted with its management. The EFCC under Olukoyede’s leadership is committed to ensuring that justice is served without fear or favor,” Erin said.
He pledged to address the concerns raised by Kosemani and called for continued collaboration between the EFCC and the NBA to strengthen the anti-corruption campaign.
