National Telescope Mourns Board Member, Professor Edet Akpakpan

The National Telescope Newspaper has announced the passing of one of its esteemed board members, Prof. Edet Bassey Akpakpan.

According to his daughter, Utibe Edet Bassey, he passed away on March 24, 2024 at the age of 76 after a brief illness.

The former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administrative) and distinguished professor of economics at the University of Uyo, was an alumnus of the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a BSc in Economics.

He also obtained his MSc at the University of Wales in 1983, and PhD at the University of Manchester in 1977, both in the United Kingdom.

Professor Akpakpan was appointed into the board of National Telescope Newspaper on March 1, 2024 and was to assume the role before his demise.

The economic expert was also an active member of several professional and academic organisations, including the Nigerian Economic Society and the World Economic Association.

A devout Christian of the Presbyterian faith, Prof. Akpakpan’s contributions extended beyond academia into his religious community.

In his honour, a service of songs will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, 73 Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, on Friday, June 7 by 5pm.

The funeral service will be conducted by the church on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the Presbyterian School, Ididep, Ibiono Ibom, after a commendation service at the University of Uyo township campus.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Telescope expressed deep sorrow over Prof. Akpakpan’s passing, describing it as a significant loss to the newspaper, Akwa Ibom State University, and Nigeria at large.
