My Emergence As Federal Judge Not By Political Support – Justice Segun-Bello

Justice Mabel Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court has revealed that becoming a federal judge in Nigeria typically requires political backing, either from the presidency or a major political party.

She shared this insight on Saturday while speaking at the 2024 Clarity Conference in Abuja, themed “The Constellation: Gathering of Stars, By Stars and For Stars.”

Justice Segun-Bello, who was the keynote speaker, recounted her challenging journey to the judiciary’s top ranks, emphasizing that her determination was key to her success despite the lack of political connections.

She noted, “To rise to the level of a federal judge, political support is usually needed. I had neither the presidency’s backing nor that of a political party, yet I persevered and achieved it. This shows that principles, when applied with determination, can overcome any obstacle.”

Addressing young participants, Justice Segun-Bello encouraged them to rise above challenging backgrounds. She added, “Coming from a difficult background is not the end. If you have the will to succeed, you can break through any barrier.”

The conference convener, Atuzie Tuzzi, explained that the event was designed to guide young people from ideas to execution, helping them overcome self-doubt and environmental limitations.
