The Nigerian military has made significant strides in its war against terror, with troops achieving impressive successes in the past year. According to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Edward Buba, the military has eliminated 10,937 terrorists, apprehended 12,538, and rescued 7,063 hostages in various operations across the country.

The troops’ efforts have been relentless, with a focus on degrading the fighting capabilities of terrorist groups. In the process, they have recovered a substantial amount of weapons and ammunition, including 8,815 weapons and 228,004 ammunition. The military has also denied oil thieves an estimated sum of over N68.4 billion, dealing a significant blow to their financing capabilities.

The successes have been recorded across various regions, with the North-East, North-Central, North-West, South-South, and South-East all witnessing significant military victories. In the North-East, for example, troops neutralized 3,151 terrorists, arrested 2,503 suspects, and rescued 1,605 kidnapped hostages.

Similarly, in the North-Central, troops of Operations Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke neutralized 1,047 violent extremists, arrested 3,001, and rescued 1,782 kidnapped hostages. The North-West also saw significant successes, with troops of Operation Hadarin Daji neutralizing 2,906 terrorists, arresting 1,826 suspects, and rescuing 2,616 kidnap hostages.

The military’s achievements are a testament to their dedication and commitment to ridding the country of terrorist threats. The successes have also been attributed to the improved collaboration between the military and other security agencies, as well as the support of the civilian population.

As the war on terror continues, the military has assured that it will remain focused and committed to achieving its objectives. The troops’ successes in 2024 are a significant step towards a safer and more secure Nigeria, and it is hoped that this momentum will be sustained in the years to come.
