Massive Drug Bust: NCS Intercepts N4.1 Billion Drugs at Lagos sea port

The Tin Can Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted hard drugs valued at N4.16 billion at the Lagos seaport.

The seized drugs include 2,144 packets of Cannabis indica from Canada, with a value of N3.2 billion, and Codeine syrup, tramadol, and other contraband from India, totaling N964.3 million.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi underscored the NCS’s commitment to thwarting harmful imports.

“The seizure of these drugs demonstrates our vigilance in intercepting and disrupting illicit activities,” he affirmed.

The operation involved intercepting two containers: one containing unregistered pharmaceutical products and another laden with illicit psychotropic substances.

Specifics include three plastic drums concealing 46 bags containing 2,144 packets of Cannabis indica, weighing 1,072 kg, imported from Canada.

Additionally, authorities seized 877 cartons of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine and 82 cartons of Really Extra Diclofenac Sodium tablets from India.

Adeniyi highlighted the significant street value of the cough syrup, estimated at N964.3 million.

Adeniyi reiterated ongoing investigations to apprehend those responsible for the drug imports, underscoring the NCS’s dedication to safeguarding society.

“This seizure serves as a warning to those involved in illicit activities,” he declared.

The Comptroller-General urged Nigerians to engage in lawful business activities, assuring that the NCS is committed to facilitating legitimate trade while ensuring public safety.

“Recent seizures expose the persistent challenges posed by sophisticated smuggling networks,” Adeniyi added.

He also emphasised the severe health and societal risks associated with these drugs.

“Misuse of Cannabis indica and codeine contributes to health complications and fuels criminal activities,” he noted, stressing that profits from illicit drug trade often fund criminal elements, posing threats to national security and economic stability.
