The Executive Governor of Oyo State. Engr. Seyi Makinde has urged corps members to be focused during their service year as they proceed to serve their host communities.
The governor stressed that service year is not for gallivanting but to impact the host community and strive for greatness.
The Governor stated this on Tuesday during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch C stream ‘1’ orientation course held at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin in Oyo State.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke enjoined the corps members to avoid reckless lifestyle.
He said, “It is pertinent for me to warn you against living a reckless life. You should be able to account creditably for the way you spend your service year. Your period of service is not for gallivanting but should be a period of sober reflection on what you can make out of yourselves after service year. Lay your hands on skills and develop the entrepreneurship spirit in you for you to be able to sustain yourself after service.
Speaking further, the Governor encouraged the Corps members to accept their posting in good faith as it is designed to make impact in their Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
“I expect that your postings would have been effected in a way that the rural communities would not be at a disadvantage. I therefore urge you to accept your postings in good faith and proceed to impact positively on your host communities. It is important that we impress it on your minds that you are not defined by your location but by the stuff you are made of. I equally charge you, especially those posted to schools to impact the knowledge acquired from your various institutions on the younger ones and join hands with us in making Oyo State an enviable one.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Odoba Abel Oche charged Corps members to maximise the eleven months of selfless service to their fatherland to deliver and excel as they have been taught during the three weeks orientation training.
“For the next eleven months, these patriotic youths shall be in various communities of Oyo and Lagos States to render selfless service to their fatherland. They shall bring to bear all the trainings they have acquired both in their various academic discipline and during the orientation course to affect their host communities positively. I am confident that given their high level of commitment to the various aspects of the induction course and high level of discipline already infused in them, they are bound to excel and deliver.”
He equally appealed to corps employers to provide conducive accomodations and adequate welfare for corps members.
“Let me at this junction appeal to Corps employers to make arrangement for the accomodation and other welfare packages that would motivate the corps members to identify and execute tangible projects in every local government area. However, the funding of such project would be the responsibility of the host communities and Local Government Authorities”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman Iseyin Local Government, Hon. Mufutau Abilawon, has implored Corps members to be law abiding and compote themselves during their service year. They should portray themselves as good ambassadors of NYSC, adding that this will enable them have a swift enjoyment in their Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
He also promised to provide a conducive environment for corps members posted to Iseyin.
According to him, Oyo State people are noted for their hospitality, likewise the Iseyin community.
Corps members posted to the town will not have problem with accommodation.
A total of 1,864 Corps members from Oyo State and their counterparts dislodged from Lagos participated in the orientation exercise.
