Makinde Reinstates, Promotes 1,800 Workers, Compensates State Anthem Composers

The Oyo State Government has corrected the promotion of 1,629 state workers, including nurses, who were negatively impacted by an administrative error during the 2017-2020 promotion exercise. The decision was made following an Executive Council meeting and was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

Additionally, the government has reinstated 47 civil servants who were wrongfully dismissed during the previous administration. This move follows approval of a request from the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni. In a similar gesture, 124 workers who were dismissed in 2012 have also been pardoned.

Stating however, that 823 workers who were let go for submitting fake certificates will not be reinstated. The Council also approved the termination of 180 employees who were hired shortly before the end of the last administration in 2019.

In another development, the Oyo State Government approved a ₦25 million compensation package for the composers of the state anthem, Asiwaju Ni Wa. The initiative, which was supported by the Executive Council, also included the allocation of land parcels to the composers. Streets will be named in their honour, and a documentary will be produced by the Ministry of Information and Orientation to commemorate the history of the anthem.

Governor Seyi Makinde praised Chief (Mrs.) Florence Ajimobi, wife of the former governor, for her vision and initiative in launching the anthem a decade ago. Until now, the composers had received no form of compensation, leading to the establishment of a special committee last year to address the issue.

The Commissioner for Public Works, Prof. Daud Sangodoyin, also presented plans for road markings and painting of kerbs across Ibadan through a direct-labour intervention programme, which the Council approved. The kerbs will be painted in the colours of Oyo State.

In addition, three bills were approved for transmission to the Oyo State House of Assembly: the Oyo State College of Health Sciences and Technology Bill, 2024; the Oyo State Flood Management Agency Bill, 2024; and the Oyo State Drug and Health Commodity Management Agency Bill, 2024. These bills are expected to enhance the state’s healthcare, infrastructure, and overall development.
