In a renewed effort to curb the growing menace of illegal arms proliferation and irregular migration in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has announced a reward system for security personnel and citizens who assist in the arrest of those involved in illegal arms trafficking, human and child trafficking, and other illicit activities across the state’s border towns.
The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Homeland Security, Retired Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration (ACG), Segun Adegoke, during a recent sensitisation tour of Oyo’s border communities.
He was accompanied by officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The purpose of the visit was to educate residents and security stakeholders in border towns on the dangers posed by illegal arms, light weapons, and the influx of irregular migrants.
The team visited several local governments, including Iwajowa, Saki West, Iseyin, and Ibarapa, where they engaged with local government chairmen, border patrol officers, and traditional rulers.
According to Adegoke, the initiative is part of Governor Makinde’s broader strategy to engage local communities in raising awareness about the threats posed by illegal arms and unregulated immigration. He emphasised that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons has led to increased insecurity, conflicts, and communal violence across Nigeria, contributing to loss of lives, displacement, and underdevelopment.
He said, “The proliferation of small arms and light weapons is a serious part of organised crime. It fuels insurgency, civil wars, human trafficking, drug trade, armed robbery, abduction, and kidnapping.
It remains a significant security challenge not just for our state but for countries worldwide. This is a major obstacle to peace and sustainable development.”
Adegoke further pointed out that the influx of illegal immigrants could destabilise Oyo State’s security and socio-economic development. He stressed that the state must take proactive measures to address these issues, as they present a shared responsibility for all citizens, especially leaders.
In his speech, Adegoke outlined some of the contributing factors to the problem, including weak border control, poor law enforcement, and the vast expanse of the state’s borders, which make monitoring and surveillance difficult.
He called on all relevant security agencies to collaborate and strengthen efforts to prevent the illegal importation of arms into the state.
He also appealed to the youth, urging them to become active participants in safeguarding their communities by reporting suspicious activities.
“You are the eyes and ears of your communities. If you see anything unusual, report it to the authorities. You are vital in helping to curb these challenges,” he said.
Adegoke further appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to use their influence to discourage the possession and use of illegal arms in their areas, stressing the importance of collective efforts in maintaining peace.
In response, the Chairmen of Iwajowa Local Government, Mr. Oyewumi Abiodun, and Saki West Local Government, Mr. Gbenga Olaleye, along with various traditional rulers, pledged to redouble their efforts in ensuring the security of the state’s border areas from illegal immigration and criminal activities.
The Special Adviser also addressed the border patrol security agencies, urging them to uphold professionalism in their duties and promising rewards for outstanding officers who successfully apprehend those involved in illegal arms trafficking.
On the tour with Adegoke were officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Governor Makinde’s administration continues to prioritise the security and well-being of the people of Oyo State, and this initiative aims to create a safer and more stable environment for all.
