No fewer than 3,051 Corps Members of 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream 2 have been deployed to Oyo State for a one-year compulsory youth service.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the NYSC orientation Camp, Iseyin on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.
Speaking at the event, the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde admonished the corps members to demonstrate high level of discipline and take advantage of the training they will acquire during the service year.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke stated that the training has been designed to equip Corps members towards the realisation of their potentials.
He said, “I implore you to give in your best during the orientation course which is fundamental and germane to a hitch- free service year as you would find out in no distance time.
“At this juncture, it is pertinent for me to give you an insight into the well-ordered and systematically planned nature of the orientation course. It comprises meticulously scheduled activities that takes up every minute you will spend here productively so that at the close of the orientation course you would have been adequately trained and prepared to take on the challenges of the rest of the service year.
“On the alarming rate of unemployment among the graduate youth, I will not forget to harp on one of the major components of the Orientation Course, the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. The programme is targeted at reducing the perennial problem of youth unemployment in the country.
“This is also a veritable opportunity to put your mind at rest about the issue of welfare and security. The State government will do all in her capacity to ensure that you have a memorable camp experience. It is noteworthy to emphasize that Oyo State is a relatively safe and free from many forms of security challenges that many states are battling with” the governor added.
Earlier, the Director, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mrs Kudirat Mustapha spoke on behalf of the Commissioner, who also doubles as the Chairman NYSC Governing board Oyo State, charging all corps members to wake up to the reality of life.
She said, “I want to charge you at this critical stage of your life to wake up to reality of life as your destinies are now in your hands. Endeavor to positively utilize your service year to make the right choices for your future in this present economic reality, make sure you tap from the intensive Physical, Leadership and Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development tranings that are designed by the scheme to groom, build and prepare you to be amendable for Nation building.”
In his address, the State Coordinator for NYSC, Mr. Odoba Abel Oche urged Corps Members to make impact during their service year.
According to him, in the past 50 years, the NYSC have been established and national awareness has increased, saying “You are also expected to contribute your quota to the unity and the development of this nation.”
He lauded the state government for their unrelenting support for the scheme in the state.
“I wish to thank Mr. Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde for his unrelenting efforts towards supporting the NYSC in Oyo State. It is no longer news that Oyo State under the leadership of His Excellency has been adjudged to be number one in the provision of Corps Welfare. We also acknowledge the constant assistance and support that we receive towards the successful conduct of every orientation programme” he said.
The highlight of the event was the administration of the oath of allegiance to the corps members by the Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabode Yerima who was represented by Justice Racheal Boyede Akinlola
Meanwhile, a total of 3,051 corps members were posted to Oyo State and their counterparts dislodged from Lagos to Oyo State NYSC orientation camp for the three weeks orientation exercise.
Present at the event were the representative of collaborating Agencies which includes, the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Man O’ War amongst others.
