Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has urged the 2,513 Corps Members deployed to Oyo State for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 orientation camp to avoid truancy and anti-social behaviours during their one-year mandatory service.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, at the closing ceremony of the three-weeks orientation camp in Ogbakuta, Iseyin, on Tuesday.
Makinde stressed the importance of diligence, dedication, and law-abiding conduct in their duties. He warned against cultism, drug abuse, internet scam, and other vices, encouraging the Corps members to engage in productive activities instead.
He said, ” I am delighted to be here on this occasion to wish you well as you depart to your various places of Primary assignment in continuation of service to the nation and humanity. Let me Congratulate you on the Successful completion of the three-week induction exercise as I am confident that you have been groomed to face the task ahead of you.
“Fellow compatriots, I enjoin you to be diligent, dedicated and law abiding in the discharge of your duties. Shun truancy and other forms of anti-social behaviours such as cultism, drug abuse, internet scam and the likes rather you should engage yourself in productive activities.”
Makinde also charged the Corps members to maximise the trainings and benefits accrued during their service year, reminding them to identify with their host communities and contribute to their development through viable projects.
“I have no doubt in my mind that the various trainings you have passed through would be of great value to you in your life’s journey. May I equally remind you that as patriots in service, we must all join hands to build a stronger, more united, peaceful and democratic nation. Therefore it is imperative that you do not isolate yourself from the overall objectives of the founding fathers of the NYSC Scheme. Let the motto of NYSC which is “Service and humility” be your guiding principle.
“I want to assure you that government will not relent in its efforts at addressing your welfare needs and ensuring your safety wherever you are posted. I urge you to pay special attention to the development of your host communities by identifying viable projects that will positively impact on the lives of our people.” Makinde added.
Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Adoba Oche, appealed to stakeholders and employers to support Corps members’ welfare and discipline them when necessary. He urged the Corps members to be law-abiding, accept challenges, and add value to their certificates through self-development programmes.
“At this juncture, I want to appeal to all corps employers to be more responsive to their responsibilities towards corps members’ welfare. Show them love, correct their mistakes and commend them when they get it right. This will engender cordial relationship between the employer and the corps members, and in the process motivate them to give their best in national service.
“I therefore urge you, my dear Corps members to strive to give your best in the national interest. Be law abiding and accept challenges that would give you an edge in life. You should add value to the certificate you have acquired by embarking on self-development programmes to be pursued after your official hours or weekends. I must also advise you against unauthorized journeys as they may lead to unpleasant situations. You should also endeavour to mix freely with the people of your host communities and integrate with them.
“I want to remind you to be determined, be an agent of positive change in your host community, identify with them and provide support in their area of needs by working with the community to undertake self-help projects, thereby, contributing to the development of the local community.
“I want to sincerely thank the State Government for the kind assistance we received for this orientation programme” he said.
