Makinde Applauds IITA Partnership, Agricultural Advancements in Oyo State

By Funmi Ojo, OYO |

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has lauded the successful partnership between the state government and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), highlighting its transformative impact on agriculture in the state.

Governor Makinde, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, spoke during the 5th anniversary of IITA Radio and the launch of IITA TV in Ibadan.

He noted the significant strides in agricultural development achieved through the collaboration with IITA.

A key example of this partnership’s success is the release of Dr. Debo Akande, an agribusiness specialist, who now serves as the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA).

The governor also commended the Youth Agribusiness Incubation Park Centre in Awe, Oyo State, for its role in training young agripreneurs in rural communities.

This initiative, he said, is part of the broader effort to empower youth and boost agricultural productivity in the state.

Makinde shared impressive data regarding the Fasola Industrial Hub, a key project under his administration.

The hub has generated 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, supported 7,000 smallholder farmers, and attracted over ₦10 billion in private sector investment.

These achievements, he noted, are a testament to the power of strategic partnerships in driving economic growth and agricultural innovation.

Looking ahead, the governor expressed optimism about a potential collaboration between the State’s Ministry of Information and IITA TV.

He believes this partnership could enhance the dissemination of agricultural news and information across the state, further supporting the agricultural sector.

IITA Director General, Dr. Simeon Ehui, underscored the importance of effective communication and the dissemination of knowledge as critical tools for advancing agricultural development.

He highlighted the role that IITA Radio and IITA TV can play in bridging information gaps and ensuring that farmers have access to valuable resources and insights.

Katherine Lopez, Head of the IITA Communication Office, represented by Ms. Lilian Edosa, echoed this sentiment.

She appealed to the public for continued support of agricultural programmes, particularly in sharing information that can benefit farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
