Liverpool’s hopes of winning the FA Cup were dashed on Sunday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to second-tier struggler Plymouth in the fourth-round match.
The loss was a shocking upset, as Liverpool is currently leading the Premier League by six points with a game in hand.
The winning goal was scored by Ryan Hardie in the 53rd minute, courtesy of a penalty kick.
Plymouth, a club from the southwest of England, is currently in last place in the second-tier Championship and recently fired Wayne Rooney as its manager.
Despite being the clear favorites, Liverpool fielded a heavily rotated lineup, resting stars like Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Virgil van Dijk. However, the strategy backfired, as the team struggled to create scoring opportunities.
The defeat marks a significant setback for Liverpool, which had been hoping to win a quadruple of major trophies this season.
In addition to leading the Premier League, the team finished top of the revamped first stage of the Champions League and has reached the English League Cup final.
Plymouth’s victory, on the other hand, is a major upset and a significant boost to the team’s morale.
The club has been struggling in the Championship, but the win over Liverpool will give them renewed hope and confidence.
The loss is a wake-up call for Liverpool, which will need to regroup and refocus on its remaining competitions.
With the Premier League title still within reach, the team will need to bounce back quickly and rediscover its winning form.
