The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has responded to the controversy surrounding the Nigerian Super Eagles’ delay at Al Abraq International Airport, attributing the incident to routine logistical and air traffic challenges rather than any form of sabotage.

In a statement released on Monday via X, the LFF clarified that the diversion of Nigeria’s flight was not meant as a hostile act.

“We firmly reject any claims that suggest foul play or sabotage in this situation,” the LFF said.

The federation pointed out that just a week earlier, the Libyan national team had experienced similar difficulties when they traveled to Nigeria for an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

“Our own national team faced significant challenges upon our arrival in Nigeria for the third match of the AFCON qualification. Despite this, we did not publicly accuse the Nigerian authorities or question their integrity,” the LFF added.

The delay, which left Nigeria’s team stranded at the airport for over 15 hours, was blamed on air traffic control and security checks. According to the LFF, such protocols are standard in international travel.

“These are standard procedures at airports worldwide, and delays or rerouting, though unfortunate, are not uncommon.”

The LFF emphasized that they had no intention of creating difficulties for the Super Eagles and expressed concern about the situation.

“We respect Nigeria and have always treated visiting teams, including our African brothers, with the respect and dignity they deserve.”

They further called for a peaceful resolution of the issue, highlighting that football should foster unity.

“Hosting these events is a great honor for us, and we strive to ensure that all teams feel safe and respected as our guests.”

In the meantime, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has formally lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the incident, and arrangements are underway to bring the Super Eagles back home.
