In a firm action to safeguard public health, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed a residential property on Adedosu Street in Otubu, Agege.
This decision underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable wastewater management and public safety.
The bungalow, which accommodates over ten rooms, was shut down due to an overfilled pit latrine that was discharging faecal matter into nearby public drains.
This situation not only produced foul odours but also posed a significant health risk, potentially leading to disease outbreaks.
Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, the General Manager of LSWMO, led the compliance team during the operation.
He stressed that such health hazards would not be tolerated, emphasizing the administration’s focus on the well-being of Lagos residents under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
Afolabi noted that Lagos had recently dealt with a cholera outbreak, reinforcing the urgency of preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
In line with this, he issued a seven-day ultimatum for the property owners and tenants to properly evacuate the pit latrine and establish a standard sewage system. Failure to comply will result in sanctions.
He also urged residents to manage their sewage systems responsibly, highlighting the crucial link between proper waste management and the prevention of waterborne diseases.
