Lagos Inducts 1,000 New Teachers, Charges Them on Performance

By Funmi Ojo

Lagos State Government has inducted 1,000 new teachers into the state’s teaching service, charging them to take their job with utmost commitment and contribute meaningfully to the progress of the teaching service and the state’s education.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs Victoria Peregrino, gave the charge at a four-day induction programme organised for the new teachers. The new teachers, who are fresh graduates, were selected across subjects with a preference for STEM courses to replace existing teachers across the state-owned secondary schools in the six education districts.

Mrs Peregrino tasked the new teachers to perform optimally in their new roles, noting that they have the opportunity to rise through the ranks to positions like tutor-general/permanent secretary or board member of the commission. She appreciated the state governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his support to lift the state teaching service and reward exceptional teachers.

The Permanent Secretary of the commission, Mrs Iyabo Seriki-Bello, also urged the inductees to demonstrate their expertise to produce future-ready and fit-for-purpose learners, justifying their appointments into the state teaching service.

The induction programme has been a tradition for newly recruited teachers since 2019, aimed at empowering educators for outstanding learner performance.
