Lagos CP Urges Residents to Refrain from Attacking Protesters

By Taiwo Niyi

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, has called on residents to avoid attacking protesters, emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations.

During a town hall meeting with traditional rulers and community leaders from Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, and Lagos Island local government areas, Fayoade addressed the concerns about the planned nationwide protest over the prevailing hardship in the country. The protest is scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 10.

While the police and other security agencies have decided against any form of protest in Lagos State, Fayoade urged residents not to take the law into their own hands by attacking protesters.

“If there must be a protest, it must be peaceful. We want to know those who want to protest so that we can make arrangements for their security. It is your right to protest legitimately as long as it does not affect the rights of others,” he stated.

Fayoade warned that any group planning a violent protest would face the police and other security agencies, stressing the need to avoid a repeat of the #EndSARS situation. He also urged residents to report any plans for violent protests to the authorities instead of taking action themselves.

The traditional ruler of Ijora/Apapa, Oba Abdulfatai Aromire, and other traditional leaders present, echoed the call for peaceful conduct and advised against joining the planned protest. They commended the efforts of Mrs. Yemisi Ojo, Commander of Area J Police Command, for tackling crime in the area, and praised the police commissioner for recently neutralizing nine kidnappers in Mushin.

The community leaders also requested the police to address the issue of land grabbers in their areas.
