The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to wear black bands for seven days in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
The IGP’s directive was communicated through a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The gesture is to pay tribute to the late General Lagbaja for his gallantry, dedication, and relentless efforts in combating insurgency and violent crimes across Nigeria.
In the statement, Adejobi noted: “Following the unfortunate passing of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black bands throughout the seven-day mourning period. This is to honor the late General who demonstrated immense courage, leadership, and commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the nation.”
He further expressed that Lagbaja’s legacy as a “great leader” in the battle against insurgency will be remembered and celebrated. The IGP concluded with a prayer for the repose of his soul: “May the soul of the late Chief of Army Staff rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), also expressed deep sorrow at the death of the late Army Chief, who passed away in Lagos after a brief illness. Argungu described General Lagbaja as a “brave soldier” who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, banditry, and terrorism, and supported President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to secure the country.
In his tribute, DIG Argungu remarked: “The late General Lagbaja played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s security architecture. His contributions will leave indelible marks in the fight against insecurity.” He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed that God grants them comfort during this difficult time.
The PSC Chairman also prayed for the success of General Olufemi Oluyede, the new Chief of Army Staff, as he takes up the mantle of leadership, urging him to sustain and build upon the valuable legacies left by his predecessor.
General Lagbaja, who was appointed as Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 56. The president had already directed that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country for seven days in honor of the late Army Chief.
May his soul rest in peace.
