The Kwara State Government, yesterday closed down three schools in Ilorin, the state capital for assault on its officials and for operating without approval from the state Ministry of Education.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Engr Musa Ayinla Yeketi, among the schools shut are; Alkhusbu Islamic Model Nursery/Primary School, Oju-Ekun, Mayowa Nursery/Primary School, Ita-Nmo and Ad Nanaji Nursery/Primary School, Abata Subi – all in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.
In order to improve the quality of teaching and learning in both public and private schools across the state, officials of the Quality Assurance Bureau (QAB) of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development on Monday embarked on schools inspection.
Efforts of the state government to sanitise the schools met a brick wall on Monday as one Alhaja Abubakar, the Proprietor of Alkhusbu Islamic Model Nursery/Primary School attacked officials of the QAB and an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Abubakar was said to have held officials of the ministry hostage within her school premises until a rescue team came to their aid and they were released.
Consequently, Engr Yeketi directed the permanent closure of Abubakar’s school alongside Mayowa Nursery/Primary School and Ad Nanaji Nursery/Primary School for failing to meet the statutory requirement of the state government.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner warned that the state government has no tolerance for illegal schools even as he charged school heads and principals to provide standard chairs and lockers for their new intakes.
While delivering the commissioner’s message, the Permanent Secretary, Hajia Maryam Garba, said the ministry will embark on inspection of furniture provided in schools, just as she urged principals to make welfare of staff and students a priority.
